A walk in the park with the Nikon D500

If you follow me on social media you'll be more than aware that I've recently been testing out the Nikon D500 for Photography News and Professional Photo magazine, (and I love the camera!) You can read my review in Photography News here.

In early May I headed to Burghley House with Becca to take some tests shots. When we arrived a lot of the gardens were fenced off as they were preparing for a craft event, so I didn't get to shoot at the specific spot that I had in mind, but this lovely pathway did the job.

These shots were all taken in natural light with the D500 and 16-80mm kit lens. As it was a lovely sunny day I decided to test out a glass prism for a few shots. I brought the little prism well over a year ago, so it was nice to finally give it a go. It's a bit of a trial and error job, but I'm so pleased with the results and the 16-80mm lens is so sharp! Get me a D500 kit please!

Summer vibes

Back in February the lovely BethyKoo invited me along to a group shoot in Northamptonshire to shoot with herself and three other models. The first part of the shoot took place in a swimming pool, I was so excited for this part as it was something completely different to what I've done before. I would  like to point out that at no point did I get in the pool, everything was shot from the sides, if one day I can be brave enough to use some underwater housing then I'll give it a go.

A first my camera struggled to focus because of the steam produced from the heat of the water. I tried to use my 70-200mm f/2.8 to allow me to zoom from one side of the pool, but the lens stayed steamed up for way too long, so I stuck to my 50mm f/1.8 throughout.

A big thank you to the models, BethyKoo, Jon Eales, Rachel and Robyn Brooke, MUAs George Saltmer, April Harwood, Holly Cover and also Abs at Aliysium for making the stunning bikini modelled by Beth.
Here's some of my favorite shots from the day, the full set can be viewed on Flickr

Gemma Stafford

After previously mentioning assisting on a video shoot for Practical Photography magazine, I've finally finished editing up the photos I took of Gemma Stafford, AND found a spare 5 minutes to write a little blog.

Here's something a little summery from the first set-up. This was actually a behind-the-scenes shot that I framed a little differently and ended up really loving!

These next two images were taken with only natural lighting. I very rarely use natural lighting for my shoots, I'd much rather trigger a couple of flashes at any opportunity. Saying that, I actually really like how these have turned out. I really should take the time to experiment with natural lighting more.

These final two images were taken with two off-camera flashes. One positioned in front to the right with a softbox, and one directly behind Gemma.

To see the video from this shoot and find out how to use a similar lighting set-up, buy the August issue of Practical Photography magazine, on sale Thursday 10th July!

Hunger Club Clothing

Sunday I shot with the lovely Becki Lloyd in my new home of Peterborough. This was my first shoot in Peterborough and having not had time to go out in search of new locations I decided to make the most of what was right in front of me. Literally. The location featured in these photos is pretty much what I can see from my windows, with a few of the shots being taken at another location 5 minutes away from my flat.

My shoot with Becki consists of 3 parts. This is the first set of images taken for my friend who runs an independenct clothing label called Hunger Club. Here Becki models their new Backhander tee and mascot tee.
